Until May 11. www.nationalgalleries.org t 0131 624 6200 h THE SUTTON GALLERY 18a Dundas Street, Edinburgh EH3 6HZ The gallery will be closed for first part of January –will be reopening Jan 14. reuben@thesuttongallery.com www.thesuttongallery.com t 07854 972930 Alfred Stockham ‘Harvest Moon’ It might be beside the sea but Slader’s Yard seems to be taking no notice of the fact that it’s high winter, having launched, just before Christmas (and running to late February), what they grandly proclaim as “an all-star rolling exhibition . . . of highly regarded West Country landscape painters.” With artists of the calibre of Alf Stockham, Julian Bailey, Simon Garden and Janette Kerr among them, this is no idle claim either – there are some really gorgeous things here. The ones that caught my particular fancy, as careful readers of this magazine over the years won’t be surprised to hear, is Alf Stockham’s group, in particular Harvest Moon. A huge, red moon hovers above a looming black rectangle – a pier end? – against a sunset sky of greeny apricot shading to warm green. Figurative? Abstract? Who cares! (see map 11) NU THUMB nails
