Tue–Sat 11–4.30 or by appointment info@willslanegallery.co.uk www.willslanegallery.co.uk t 01736 795723 Giorgio de Chirico ‘Castor’ 1973 With his Metaphysical paintings of c.1910-15 de Chirico exerted a remarkable influence on the direction Surrealist painting was to take, but thereafter his long career up to his death in 1978 has always proved something of a headache to art-historians with seemingly decades worth of an often difficult and somewhat repetitive neo-classicism. But the sculpture that he took up in the late 60s when he was nearly 80 is something else, as this eye-opening show at the Estorick Collection makes plain, his small bronzes, largely deriving from themes in his early work, possessing a powerful presence – spectral and disturbing – or, as he put it, “similar to people glimpsed in a room we thought was empty.” NU THUMB nails
