It was a category he always rejected however and with time and hindsight it is becoming increasingly apparent that it did in fact have really rather little to do with it. As this engaging show at Abbot Hall reveals, Caulfield was, to begin with, much more interested in the early 20th Century Modernist tradition of still-life painting – artists Gris, Braque and Leger – out of this constructing an art that in the end was really like nobody else’s at all.
