Abstract oil paintings which Edgar Holloway ‘Self Portrait’ From selling his etchings of the landscape around Doncaster in his father’s framing shop to the lettering, book jackets, maps and prints he made while living in an Eric Gill designed house in Ditchling, where he was a member of Gill’s Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic, Edgar Holloway’s long life (1914-2008) represents the most remarkable of journeys. This beautiful touring show, organised by Doncaster Art Gallery and currently showing at Monnow Valley Arts (map 5), also coincides with the publication of a handsome biography of Holloway by his widow Jennifer (Sansom & Co). Stand out for me are the remarkably moving series of etched self-portraits he made from youth to old age and the etched studies of famous figures – Woolf, Eliot and Moore among them. NU THUMB nails
