Mon–Fri 9.30–6, Sat 11–4 info@waterhousedodd.com www.waterhousedodd.com t 020 7734 7800 With just ten paintings in it, the J.D Fergusson show currently at Bourne Fine Art (map 3) might, at first sight, seem a comparatively minor affair, but consider their sheer quality and range and it soon becomes apparent that this is an absolute gem of a show, one that encapsulates the ‘soul’ of his quite remarkable genius. From a small panel painted on the spot when he was working outside in Fife and Edinburgh via others dating from c.1910 when he was painting in Paris and Paris-Plage and working alongside the Fauvists, to the major 1934 piece A Nous la Liberté, Fergusson is never simply an observer, always displaying a remarkable gift of exhilarating engagement with his subject matter, one that sweeps you irresistibly along in a cloud of colour. The Scottish Gallery also feature the artist’s paintings, sculptures and drawings this month in ‘La Vie Bohème’. NU THUMB nails J.D Fergusson ‘Cassis from the West’, c.1930
