A similar dualism is apparent in his remarkable parallel careers as both painter and as one of the world’s leading designers for opera and ballet –the Royal Opera House, Metropolitan, Glyndebourne and Paris Opera among them. While there are opera designs among the works at Martin Tinney (map 5), it is his other life that takes precedence here and it is the thorough grounding in a superb technique from his Glasgow training, above all in the sumptuous textures and sheen of his simple, austere still-lifes, that shines through.
