GALLERIES AUGUST 13 MAP 25 LONDON CORK STREET THUMB nails Generally regarded as Pakistan’s most distinguished artist ofthe older generation, Jamil Naqsh now leads a reclusive and hugely productive life in London, the exhibition ofhis calligraphic work currently on at the Albemarle being the second oftwo shows on these religiously-inspired themes that have been running at the gallery since early July. The shows themselves can only represent the tip ofan iceberg ofa prodigious output, some 400 paintings in all, that have marked a major recent shift in Naqsh’s work away from the more figurative, modernist style that had previously characterised his work. Predominantly abstract in form, Naqsh achieves a consistently remarkable level of bold mark-making and vibrant colour, the discipline ofthe form providing fertile ground for exhilarating invention.
