Chambers has always been one of that old and increasingly rare breed of painter/printmakers for whom printmaking is not simply a nice little add-on to the core business of painting but a key part of his thinking, a place where he/she can play and experiment in ways that can be difficult in painting itself. He has been printmaking on a dynamic and prolific scale recently and on the evidence of the four ecstatic new paintings shown here, alongside two recent print series, Chambers’ work has taken a significant new direction. A painting such as Beard/Speak/Turkish Finches marks what feels like the start of a new and intensely lyrical, perhaps less self-conscious direction. NU THUMB nails
