A new book on him, to accompany this show at Martin Tinney in Cardiff, should undoubtedly help that process; he’s certainly a very different kind of artist in both his painterly touch and vivid sense of colour. His compatriot Ceri Richards admired, too, how he “painted the bones beneath the land- scape” and it is this which gives an enduring toughness to work that as he himself puts it, comes out of a “lifetime’s gazing.” NU THUMB nails
