Laurie Kitchen: ‘These Shores and Gwen John ‘Young Woman in Red Shawl’ When he first set up his gallery in Cardiff in 1992 to show predom- inantly Welsh-born or -based artists, Martin Tinney was anticipating Welsh political devolution by some 5 years! Now marking 20 years in a business that he has since successfully developed into a Principality-wide enterprise with the acquisition of Tegfryn on Anglesey in 2010, he is putting on an exhibition that celebrates that achievement with a show of the best of the artists, contemporary and historical, that he has exhibited over that time. I should be illustrating this piece with one of the living Welsh artists he has championed so consistently over the years, but when it is a Gwen John as intense and quietly serene as this . . .
