Maybe it's the opportunity for solitary reflection and thought as much as the light and colours of coastal Suffolk where she is based, the watery steppes and huge skies that to an American, Martha Gellhorn, looked 'cold and dun-coloured'. Certainly her landscapes are bigger and have a new blackness and bleakness about them: much more is being risked, much more won.
