Hughes, Arts Council Collection Patrick Hughes had his first solo exhibition in 1961 aged 21. Now, 50 years later, he is still pursuing his witty and profound explorations of the way we (humans) see and still finding remarkably inventive and visually astonishing ways of doing so. It’s a remarkable career but one that has not, of course, been properly acknowledged by any of our public galleries, so it has been left to the gallery he has shown with since 1970, Flowers , to do the proper thing. And they have done it in real style too, devoting both their spaces, Kingsland Road and Cork Street, to a full- scale retrospective, with loans from public and private collections. As an investigator of the no-man’s land between art and science there really is nobody quite like him . . . NU THUMB nails
