One of the triplets born to Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson in 1934, Nicholson has, in the face of this almost overwhelmingly grand artistic heritage, shown a remarkable persistence and tenacity of purpose, coming to painting, as so many women artists of the first half of 20th C. did, in her 40s, after children, and without any formal training. The St Ives inheritance is still clearly there though in both the landscapes and still-lifes – sometimes fused in the same image – but to it she always adds her own, very distinct mark, of gentle wit and a feeling for the life and humanity of things.
